1. Abstract

The aim of this workshop is to give attendees an overview of how translation is involved in EU legal drafting and its implications for legal drafters, language professionals as well as for the official languages of the EU. We will discuss key factors and principles connected with the multilingual drafting of law, their impact on the language and terminology of multilingual law and the resulting emergence of Eurolects, hybrid variants of legal languages. Finally, we will overview research trends into EU legal drafting and translation, focusing on the recently dominant trend of corpus linguistics. The final part of the workshop will focus on the role and usefulness of corpora for legal linguistics/translation and will also include a hands-on corpus session on Sketch Engine.
